They were collected as an anthology that added two extra stories. Like The Bane Chronicles and Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy, the first seven stories were first published online. These other perspective characters are: Matthew Fairchild, Anna Lightwood, Sister Emilia, Tessa Gray, Céline Montclair, Isabelle Lightwood, Alec Lightwood, Tiberius Blackthorn, Livia Blackthorn and Janus. The other perspectives are from people with whom his story is connected through the Shadowmarket. One of these perspectives is always Jem Carstairs/Brother Zachariah from The Infernal Devices. The stories are told from two or more perspectives. The stories are set at the eponymous Shadow Market, a meeting place for Downworlders where all kinds of magic items are sold. It is written by Cassandra Clare, Maureen Johnson, Sarah Rees Brennan, Robin Wasserman and Kelly Link.

Matthew was planning to ask James to be his parabatai. His best friend, James, was being expelled and several of the students, including Christopher and Thomas Lightwood, were watching parents arrive at the school. Two years earlier, Matthew had been among the students at the Shadowhunter Academy in Idris.
Matthew unexpectedly throws his arm around Brother Zachariah and calls him “Uncle Jem.” Brother Zachariah, who is a member of the Silent Brothers, encounters Matthew Fairchild. It is hidden from mundane eyes by glamour. Brother Zachariah, who was named Jem Carstairs before joining the order of the Silent Brothers, is in the London Shadow Market, a place where Downworlders gather to buy, sell, and trade.
The first story of this novel is titled “Cast Long Shadows.” It opens in London's Shadow Market in the year 1901.
